My name is Missae [spanish] and I like to draw Script which is what I mainly draw. Started drawing it in 9th grade I believe, and been doing it for about 3 years now or close to 3 years now. All I can say is now that I look back at my old ones I always ask my self how I found that cool, and when I look @ the latest work you can truly see the HUGE improvements.

=====My Story=====

I was born in Guerrero, Mexico on the 16th of December. I honestly do not remember much about Mexico because I was brought to the U.S. as a baby. I guess it could be said I am a Mexican American. Ever since then, I have spent my life in Garland, Texas with my family, which consist of my two brothers, two sisters, mom, and dad. I have always been the quiet one, the shy one; sometimes people misjudge me because of my silence, and teachers tend to overlook me, but I'm an incredibly thoughtful person with a story to tell.
None of my family has ever finished high school, let alone college, so it is my dream to go to a university and pursue a career in something I enjoy. This career with not include landscaping, construction, or fast food...I want to be a teacher. AVID has everything to do with my desire to pursue this career. Now let me tell you about my "AVID experience".
I started 8th grade at Bussey Middle School. I knew no one and no one knew me. People stared; I remained quiet. Eventually people started talking to me, but I didn't realize they were trouble makers; I didn't notice the shaved eye brows and rolled up jeans. We hung out at school, and became close. The first semester went by quickly but the second semester brought trouble when a player from the football team started talking trash about one of my homeboys. What started as something small eventually escalated to a 'Brown vs. Black' conflict. Of course I got involved. From the start, it was clear things would not turn out for the best. At this point, two of my homeboys were sent to Alternative Education Center for what I now see as something idiotic. One of my homeboys had brought a pair of brass knuckles...now I actually think it was a good thing that he got caught. This time no one was seriously injured. With one of ours at AEC, more of us [The Mexicans] got angrier, anxious to fight. Then it happened. I was called by my homeboy Jorge that they were about to go fight and they asked me to go with the. Without hesitation I followed. It turned out to be a quick fight, and this brought an end to the 'Brown vs. Black' conflict. Still, there were strong tensions from both sides.
Toward the end of the school year, Ms.Epperson, My U.S. History teacher pulled me out of class and asked me a serious question. She said, "Missael, net year would you like to be in Pre-Ap History? You taking this class is silly; you should be challenged. You are a smart kid." I did not know how to react to question other than to just smile. It was such a privilege to be asked, I also immediately said yes. This was the first time anybody actually made me fell like someone who was intelligent enough to take Pre-Ap courses. While I was taken aback by her confidence in me, what happened next was even more of a surprise.
Since we were the 8th grade class, the teacher wre asked if they had ny recommendations for the AVID program at North Garland. Unexpectedly, Ms.Epperson actually selected me. At first, I rejected this idea since I had no idea what AVID was. I thought it was for nerds. I later came to understand the AVID program would, in fact help me get to places I would thought unreachable. My views changed because Ms.Epperson actually encouraged me (or should I say forced me) to fill out the AVID application. Since I respected her, I wrote the essay and completed all the blanks. My original thought was that I was not going to get accepted. Then one day in the mail, I found a letter; I had been accepted. This was probably the best news I have ever heard. During May, we had the the 8th grade awards ceremony. Each teacher picked the best students in their class. I honestly did not expect Ms.Epperson to choose me, so when they called my name I was more than surprised. As a matter of fact, receiving this award was the first time I actually thought I would be successful. It also helped me believe I could face the challenges of what was to come next.
High School started a new chapter, and I was introduced to my new AVID family, led by Mrs.Lisa Olsen. Mrs.Olsen, has inspired me deeply. Over the past three years she had encouraged me and given me helpful advice. She helped to make freshman year much easier than I thought it would be. However, it was the summer between freshman and sophomore years- that launched me into manhood-that I needed support the most. My mom was expecting a baby boy; we were excited to welcome this new life into our family. Little did we know, our happiness would turn to tears. My mom was seven months in, she has her baby shower and things seemed great. Two days later, Mom received horrifying news-something no mother should ever hear. She had gone for a regular checkup so my brother and I were just told to take care of my younger brother. Without question, we obeyed. It was at that very appointment that the doctors told my mother the baby had died. I knew something wasn't right when she didn't come home that day. Three days later, my brother and I were told out little brother, the baby we anticipated for months, had passed.
As a family, we mourned together. One memory still haunts me. I can see my mother, on her knees, crying her eyes out in front of my younger brother's lifeless body while my dad hugged her, trying to comfort her. This made the beginning of school extremely difficult. My grades stumbled; I could not focus. Although it was difficult. I still managed to finish the school year strong. I will admit, I did not finish school wth the grade I would have liked. Still, with the help of Mrs.Olsen and my AVID family who helped me cope with the loss of my brother, I made it through.
AVID has helped me in various ways both academically and mentally. Without AVID, I would not have believed there is a future for me. Ms.Epperson not only gave me that extra push to go forward and she inspired me to pursue teaching as a career. Mrs.Olsen has always been there, through thick and thin, and helped me cope with the loss of my brother. In fact she might have even helped me just a little with this very essay. So now I want to give back to the community. I was to show gratitude for all my teachers have done for me. I want to be - for some students - what Ms.Epperson and Mrs.Olsen have been for me. Had I never met Ms.Epperson or Mrs.Olsen, I think it would be safe to say that I would have been a lost soul.
